Best Ute Setup for Caravanning Australia
If you're towing a caravan across Australia - whether it's a long weekend or a full-time lifestyle - your ute setup is the difference between a trip that flows and one that frustrates.
Below you'll find real setups from real Australians, and everything you need to build yours.
The three things caravanners can’t compromise on are dust, weight, and security. Gear that lets in dust after one dirt road, a canopy that pushes you over GVM, or a setup with weak points you worry about every time you leave camp – those are the problems we solve.
Utemaster gear is built to solve exactly that. The Centurion MK4 Canopy is aluminium‑constructed, fully sealed against dust and water, locks with the vehicle, and is lighter than most fibreglass alternatives – which matters when you’re towing and managing GVM.
That’s why you’ll see Utemaster setups on the road from Cape York to the Nullarbor. Check them out below...
Five years. No fixed address. Allan and Jess have been living full‑time on the road, travelling Australia with their D‑MAX and Goldstream caravan.
Their previous roller‑cover setup never sealed, leaving gear coated orange after every dirt‑road run. When they upgraded to the D‑MAX they reset and re‑thought everything. They needed a setup that was light, practical, and easy to use every day.
They chose the Utemaster Centurion MK4 Canopy. The difference was immediate.
“The idea is to be relaxed and easy‑going. Pulling stuff in and out all the time gets pretty stressful,” they say. Now they spend more time enjoying the places they find.
Grant is a weekend warrior and long‑distance tourer – fishing trips, surf runs, and caravan missions are his thing. When he bought his V6 XLT Ford Ranger he knew a tub canopy was priority. Fibreglass looked fancy but was fragile, heavy, and had side windows that offered limited security.
The Centurion MK4 Canopy gave him:
“After a year I can say it’s indestructible. I’ve hit trees, survived a cyclone, and it never let a drop of water in,” Grant says.
Four things separate a setup that works from one that becomes a problem on the road.
Most caravanners running Utemaster gear build around the same core components:

Yes. Its aluminium construction keeps the weight low, preserving your GVM while still providing a robust, sealed enclosure.
It uses a full‑perimeter seal on all doors and openings. Customers who travel on unsealed roads – including full‑time tourers – report gear staying completely clean and dry.
Absolutely. The cantilever roof rack mounts to the canopy, not the ute roof, giving a 200 kg dynamic load rating. Adding a roof‑top tent won’t void your vehicle warranty.
The canopy has no side windows and a covered locking mechanism that integrates with your vehicle’s central locking. There are no exposed weak points, so you can leave camp confident that everything is locked. Check out our Bandit Proof locking here:
The Centurion Canopy is constructed with Aluminium which makes it lighter fibreglass options.
